TEACHERS ACROSS THE U.S. ARE BEGGING TO GET COPIES OF "AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH", BUT POLITICS AND RED TAPE ARE GETTING IN THE WAY.

FORGET ABOUT IT.. LET'S JUST DO IT!

Hi there. We are the company that runs HOTorNOT.com. We are a small company, but we like to think that with the Internet we can make a difference in the world.

We recently saw the movie "An Inconvenient Truth".

We are normal people like you. We are not extreme environmentalists. We don't recycle all the time and we tend to leave the lights on... but we have to tell you, the movie scared the living daylights out of us and we think everyone should see it.

We were upset to read a piece in The Washington Post where the movie producers said they were having a hard time getting the movie into the hands of teachers to show their students. There are two reasons for this as far as we can tell:

  1. The movie's distributor, Paramount Classics, doesn't want to give the movie away for free.
  2. The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) doesn't want to distribute the film to their members citing it as a special interest.

We can understand these points. Paramount is a business, and the NSTA has a right to not get involved with things they don't want to (although they DO take money from Exxon, as the Washington Post article points out).

There is some controversy around all of this, but we don't really care who is right and who is wrong.. the only thing we care about is that since the washington post piece came out, teachers have started requesting the movie directly. THERE ARE NOW TENS OF THOUSANDS OF TEACHERS WHO HAVE REQUESTED COPIES OF THE MOVIE, AND THEY AREN'T GETTING THEM. But heck, that's a problem we think we can all solve together.

We decided to start a website where teachers could request a copy of the movie, and people like you and me could just buy them on Amazon and have them sent. We contacted the movie's producers to let them know we wanted to do this, and found out they already have a non-profit set up to do this.. this made us happy because we're lazy, and less work = good :)

Because the movie companies still want to make their money (except the main production company, who is donating all their profits because THEY are cool), it costs the non-profit a bit under $25 to buy and send one copy to one teacher.

LET'S JUST DO IT. They need about a million bucks to send 50,000 copies.. so we decided to give a good chunk of our profits from running HOTorNOT to get things started. We're sending a check in for $25,000. That's not chump change to us, but this is something we believe in.

If you saw the movie and feel it is important for others to see it, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT TOO AND JOIN US!

Do the following, in any order:

  • If you can, buy a hybrid.
  • Write a letter to your congressional representative.

  • If you can't do the above, at least DONATE some cash to help the teachers get the movie.

Make sure to write "movie" in the Company Name of your form, so they know to use your donation towards this effort!! Donations are tax deductible in the U.S.

  • Watch the movie if you haven't already.
  • Send your friends to this page so they can do the same, or link to it from your blog/myspace! The link is http://IsTheWorldToo.HOTorNOT.com

The movie is already mandatory viewing for students in Norway and Sweden.. Let's make sure students in the States get to watch it too.

Thanks for caring like we do.
